    progesterone_dhea_estrogenWhat is estrogen?

Estrogen is a potent female sex hormone made by the ovaries. It’s essential for life; it controls reproduction. Estrogen occurs in both men and women. Men make sufficient estrogen for their needs. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for women, particularly as they head toward and enter those menopausal years. Estrogen also has the capacity to stimulate some tumors to grow (estrogen dominance). Those tumors that have estrogen receptors will grow in response to circulating estrogen in a woman’s body.

    What does estrogen do?

Estrogen is responsible for the development of female secondary sex characteristics such as breasts. Estrogen is secreted mostly by the ovaries, but can also be released by the adrenals and fatty tissue. After release to the blood stream estrogen moves to its receptors that are located in many different tissues such as the uterus, breasts, bones, heart and brain. Because there are estrogen receptors in the brain, estrogen plays a significant role in women’s mental health and its imbalances can lead to symptoms of mood swings, memory problems, and anxiety.Three estrogens are produced by the woman’s body are estrone (E1) estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3).

    Estrogen imbalance

Scientists believe the by-products of estrogen dominance have an influence on health issue in both men and women, including prostate and breast cancers. An estrogen dominance can also accelerate the aging process and lead to weight gain and bloating, reduced libido, fibrocystic or sensitive breasts, migraines, foggy thinking, fatigue, mood swings, insomnia, fibroids and ovarian cysts. Also it has been linked to autoimmune disorders and allergies, as well.

Conversely, diminished estrogen levels could produce undesirable effects: vaginal dryness, urinary concerns, hot flashes loss of skin elasticity and bone loss, as well as potentially hastening dementia.

Balance is key. The right estrogen levels affect your health and improve your quality of your life.
