• Hormone Testing

The first step in hormone balancing therapy is to determine your current hormone status. This involves measuring your levels of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and if you suffer from fatigue or stress we will also measure your cortisol and thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) levels. Rejuvenate Doctor uses a combination of the following hormone testing methods to determine hormone levels.

    Saliva Testing

saliva-testTesting for hormones using saliva, is a method which has gained popularity in the recent years. This is due to the simplicity and noninvasive nature of sample collection. Saliva tests reflect only the metabolic process of salivary glands and a limited passive diffusion of the hormones from the bloodstream. This test does not represent circulating hormones. Saliva is used for selected situations such as cortisol and melatonin monitoring of AM/PM circadian rhythm.

Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and above all, accurate means of testing steroid hormones. Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between steroid hormone levels in saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or “bioavailable.” It is this fraction of total hormone that is free to enter the target tissues in the brain, uterus, skin, and breasts.

Hormone Levels that can be tested in Saliva:

    • Estradiol (E2)
    • Estrone (E1)
    • Estriol (E3)
    • Progesterone (pg)
    • Testosterone (T)
    • DHEA-S (Ds)
    • Cortisol (C)

    Blood Testing

blood-testIf further testing is required (which is usually covered under most health insurances policies) your Rejuvenate Doctor will draw the blood for hormone level testing. A single blood sample is taken and sent to the lab for analysis.

In WOMEN a hormone blood test evaluates hormonal balance of the following hormones:

    • The 3 estrogens – the balance of estrone, estradiol, and estriol
    • Progesterone – this hormone rises and falls during the menstrual cycle, influencing fertility and PMS, and after menopause it modulates the effects of estrogens
    • Two androgens – both testosterone and DHEA affect sexual function, body composition, and cognition
    • Estrogen metabolites – the “2″ and “16a” forms of hydroxylated estrone have different affects on genetic expression and rate of cell proliferation – their ratio may indicate a woman’s risk for breast and endometrial cancer
    • Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) – Also known as testosterone-estrogen binding globulin. SHBG influences the circulating levels of free testosterone and estradiol

In MEN a hormone blood test evaluates hormonal balance of the following hormones:

    • Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) – A SHBG level at the upper end of the normal range is the ideal situation limiting the risk of androgen action on hair follicles (hair Loss) while permitting an acceptable level of free testosterone to maintain other body functions (maintains muscle mass, sex drive and bone mass).
    • Estrogens (usually only the estradiol (E2) form is tested)
    • Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and/or Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
    • Total testosterone (T)
    • Free testosterone (that testosterone which is not bound to other molecules like SHBG)
    • Androstenedione (possibly androstenediol too)
    • Follicular stimulating hormone (FSH)

    Urine Testing

24 Hour Urine Hormones Evaluation Test and First Void Morning Urine measures hormones released and circulating in the body in a 24hr period as well as metabolites of selected hormones.

    Rejuvenate Doctor’s hormone therapy program:

Once your overall hormonal status has been established, a customized bio-identical hormone replacement program may be formulated to suite your own individual requirements. This involves customizing the dose of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA to bring them back to normal healthy physiological levels. The levels of each hormone are then routinely monitored to ensure they all remain within normal ranges promoting optimal health and vitality.
